Cultivating Psychological and Spiritual Wellness

I didn't too much care for the Meeting Aesclepius exercise.  Being Christian, I don’t feel comfortable putting emphasis on other gods.  I used this time to reflect on the wisdom, speech, and heart of Jesus, or Yeshua, if you prefer.  When asked to allow this person to dissolve and enter my body, I did feel a sense of wisdom and clarity for a moment. I still enjoy practicing the universal loving-kindness exercise and just simply listening to relaxing music while focusing on my breathing and clearing my mind.  I do plan on continuing meditation.  It has helped my psychological wellness.  I am calmer and better able to handle stress.  As a result, I don’t turn to food for comfort and I am finally losing weight again. It is difficult to find time to meditate. I’ve got three kids running around screaming.  My two year old is a major distraction.  I found out that if I sit there with the calm music on and close my eyes and ignore him, he will either leave the room or climb up in my lap to see what I’m doing.  Then he gets a small dose of sitting calmly just for a minute or two J

“One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself”. I completely agree with this.  It is our responsibility to practice what we preach, so to speak.  If we don’t experience it ourselves, how will we be able to honestly describe it to our clients? We should be developing our health in every aspect so that we can show others how to achieve wellness.  I honestly think that those that have struggled and overcome make the best mentors because they have a better understanding of what the client is going through.  To implement psychological and spiritual growth in my personal life I plan on continuing with meditation, positive thinking, yoga, regular exercise, studying scripture, prayer….whatever it takes and whatever I feel is the correct path for me at the time.

  1. Hi Becky,

    Great post on your blog.

It is great to hear that some of the exercises you are doing are helping you with your body. Great job and keep it up. I have faith in you. I can relate having difficulty to find time. I have a 3 year old myself and having two more I am sure it is full spead ahead until they are in bed.

I agree that having experienced what you are trying to teach or describe that experience to another. It is funny because before I had a child of my own, I didn't realize the amount of time and energy it required to ensure they are taken care of and thought of parents in a completely different way than I do now. It is very true that by experiencing certain events gives you the best chance of describing it or teaching it to others.

    Great post.

  2. Hi Becky-
I admire the fact that you changed the exercise into your own to fit your own spiritual needs and beliefs.
I also completely agree that the best mentors are those that have been down the path. I feel as though a better connection is formed and a the true sense of the word "mentor" is there.

  3. Hi Becky,

Like you I had to switch the exercise to fit my own needs. Once switched it works so much better for me. I do agree with you can't relate any situation that you haven't been through. Great post...

  4. Becky,
I didn't care for this mediation exercise as much as the Loving-Kindness one either. I am glad to hear that you are able to use the meditation exercises to help you relax and that it has also helped you lose weight. It is true about having experience in what you are teaching your clients. It helps the clients believe you when they can relate to you.

  5. I liked what you said about the video, as I hoped that I wasn't the only one feeling a little uneasy about it. However, it is a learning experience, and if we don't experience it, how can we share it with others when they do. Right? I enjoyed your posting on this subject. Great thought!

  6. First off, I agree with your viewpoint on this particular meditation. :)

Second, I soooo identify with the noise of 3 little kids! Sometimes it's hard to hear myself think let alone focus on meditation! Isn't it terrific how quickly the little ones learn by example, though? There's no telling how far reaching the little moments of silence will be for your little one. :)

  7. Good Evening Becky,
I also liked what you said about the video. If I would not have watched this video I would have not know any of the information about medication because I have never done it before. I know what you mean when you talk about noise which your children because I also have the same problem. Do you have any ideas of how to work around that? Thank you for all the great insight and keep up the great work!
